IN THE FADE
KIRSTEN TURNER

Kirsten Turner’s paintings explore ambiguous notions of rites of passage, being present in a moment of time and the banality of the everyday.
In the fade is a series of faces concerned with an expanded notion of portraiture that highlights subtle entry points and barriers; be it a beard concealing, or a teary eye revealing a sensual opening into the body. These faces are sourced from personal snapshots, with this series continuing the artists’ interest in fluctuating feelings of connection and separation.
Turner paints from photographs. While each person is a starting point for the making of the work it is not with them she spends her time. Instead, the occasion is the process of translating their photographic representation into paint.
Prompted by Roland Barthes’s The Other’s Body, these paintings seek to replicate the focus of the viewer (or the lover) with a gaze so intent all else fades away.
